But how does it all work?
This website is created on an open source content management system (CMS) called Textpattern. It is extremely flexible and there's a very wide range of plugins available to customise and extend the functionality. The site also allows (non)members to interact with the Institute and comment on articles and text that this site contains. The website will only be enhanced by this dialogue.
The site is (hopefully) completely valid against XHTML strict 1.0 coding standards and makes use of some newer technology to enhance the visitor experience. You could call it web 2.0, but that is such a pretentious phrase. The code behind the site is mainly php, and this generates the HTML which is styled using CSS 2 with enhanced functionality provided by JavaScript.
Therefore, it makes use of:
- Google's maps api
- Zenphoto gallery
- flickr's photo sharing api - uses JSON to parse images.
- RSS technology
- Vanilla forum software
- Social sharing icons - if you use these services, you can see how many people rate the site. Increase the awareness of BIPS
- Microformats -hCard and geo formats
